Once again the Havelock Mussel Festival proved to be a great success. With over 5500 attending the event “a community having fun together” was a shared sentiment amongst stall holders, entertainers and festival – goers on Sat 21st March.
On behalf of the Havelock Mussel Festival Committee we would like to take this opportunity to extend our thanks for the wonderful support shown by our Sponsors who make this event possible and to all the volunteers who assist with many aspects of making this event the success it is.
A record number of 70 stalls offered food, wine and beer, crafts and industry displays. On the main stage where there were performances from Queen Charlotte College Kapa Haka Group, Embassy Jazz, Highland dancing from Gail Dodson School of Dance (also raising funds for representation at 2010 Edinburgh Tattoo), the fabulous Disco Divas belting out favourite disco/70’s tunes and of course the well loved Topp Twins – something to keep everyone entertained all day long.
The Taste Aquaculture Cooking Show also proved very popular with demonstrations from Chris Fortune & Bill Floyd as well as Richard Till who also judged the best stalls (winners listed below).
The NIWA Kidzone proved extremely popular with its move to the tennis court enabling organisers to provide many more activities for the children. It also provided a safer environment with parents being able to enjoy the stage entertainment, food & refreshments while kids had a whale of a time on the inflatables, art competitions and listening to stories from Pom Pom the Clown & Havelock Theatre group.
Meanwhile the competition area was much improved with competitors for the Kono Mussel Opening & EBA Mussel Munch being raised up on a stage enabling the crowd to see much more of the activities. The Sealord Mussel Hustle once again provided much hilarity both for competitors and observers!
